Holi: A Dermatologist’s Guide to Protect Your Skin and Hair

Holi is a festival of colours, joy and togetherness. However, every year after Holi, we as dermatologists notice a sharp rise in cases of skin rashes, acne flare-ups, hair dryness, and eye irritation. The good news is that most of these problems are preventable with a few simple precautions.

Many Holi colours available in the market may contain industrial dyes, heavy metals such as lead and copper, and alkaline substances. These chemicals can cause itching, redness, irritation, allergic reactions, and sometimes even chemical burns. Individuals with sensitive skin, eczema, acne, rosacea, or pigmentation disorders should be especially cautious. Here are a few practical tips for a safer Holi celebration.

Before Playing Holi:

• Apply a generous amount of moisturizer to create a protective barrier on the skin.
• Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) at least 20–30 minutes before stepping out.
• Apply coconut oil to the hair to reduce dryness and minimize damage.
• Wear full-sleeved cotton clothes to limit direct skin exposure.
• Avoid cosmetic procedures such as chemical peels or laser treatments close to Holi.
During Holi:
• Prefer dry colours and choose reputed brands claiming safer ingredients.
• Avoid forceful rubbing of colours, especially on the face.
• Reapply sunscreen every 3–4 hours if playing outdoors.
• Protect your eyes. If colour enters the eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of clean water.
After Playing Holi:
• Rinse off colours gently with lukewarm water.
• Use a mild cleanser; avoid harsh soaps and scrubs.
• Do not use kerosene, petrol, or other chemicals to remove stubborn stains.
• Avoid excessive scrubbing, as friction can worsen irritation and lead to pigmentation.
• Apply a soothing moisturizer to help restore the skin barrier.
• Wash hair with a mild shampoo and follow with a conditioner to reduce dryness.

If you experience persistent redness, swelling, severe itching, blisters, or burning lasting more than 48 hours, consult a dermatologist promptly. Early treatment helps prevent complications and post-inflammatory pigmentation.

It is important to understand that so-called “herbal” or “Holi-safe” colours can also trigger reactions in some individuals. Doing a simple patch test on the inner arm before use can help reduce risk.

Holi should create beautiful memories, not skin problems. With a little awareness and sensible care, you can celebrate safely while keeping your skin and hair healthy.
Celebrate responsibly and let the colours bring happiness—not harm.
